This thread so far is really tame, not “real drama” as we have seen recently. But it definitely gives parents something to mull over.
Is tracking your child a matter of safety? Or is it a matter of being tracked yourself and by the government?
The OP asked “would you buy a tracking device to locate your child at any given time?” And really this doesn’t have to mean the microchip… but ironically the conversation quickly turned to them!!!
For those who think that this is not a serious thing, and that it can’t happen, think again! They are developing microchips the size of grains of sand and trying to convince parents that “in the name of safety” we need to protect our children by tracking their every move. Google around, you will find plenty of information on the implants. They are already used in animals.
Many of the moms seem to think that tracking the child will make them safer, that they could find the child in the case of a kidnapping. Sure, it *might* help at that point, but by the time the clearance got to the people to track your child VIA satellite, it would likely be too late. Just being bluntly honest here.
Giving the government the right to track a person, no matter where they are, is not a good thing. Too much power is going that way, and soon 1984 will be a reality (even more so than it already is).
KUDOS to the mamas that are saying no, or at least questioning it! I for one will NEVER place a microchip in my children, nor will I “track” them so that I can check up on them or make sure they are doing what they should. We are all entitled to a little privacy. Children must earn theirs. If you don’t trust your kid, stop letting them go out and do things; don’t put a microchip in their arm!
One of our founding fathers, Ben Franklin said “Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” We need to think about this before giving up our little freedoms.
Here is some of what is being said in the thread so far:

What is your stance on this ? Would you buy a tracking device to locate your child at any given time ?

Re: child gps
dh wants to put a tracking device on dd when she’s old enough to start lying/fibbing about where/what she goes and does. i would only do it if she gave us a reason not to trust her. her vehicle (when that time comes) will have some sort of tracking on it just in case. i am of the school of thought like i said previously trust until you have no reason to trust. that’s how i was raised. honestly i don’t know what i’m going to do when she gets older about keeping tabs on her.

Re: child gps
I personally think it’s creepy but I reserve the right to change my mind when my DD gets old enough to go places alone it’s the kind of thing I really would have resented as a teenager because I was smart and trustworthy most of the time. But, not every kid is. And the mamas who brought up kidnapping, accidents etc. have a good point!!!

I am not even one tiny bit comfortable with the idea. In fact I would absolutely refuse.

Re: child gps
I cant decide what I am more paranoid about – my child being abducted or the ability for the government to track her (and therefore my) every movement.I will say that its a sad state when we are actually seriously even thinking about it.

Re: child gps
I think that it’s an interesting idea safety wise but I am a firm believer in having trust in your children and raising them in a way in which you would not need that when they are older because they feel that they can be open and honest with you and that you are open to comprimising with them so that they do not need to sneak out or go places that they shouldn’t go. KWIM?? So to answer your question absolutly not… But you know different strokes for different folks (sorry for the typos also… the baby is super fussy)

Nope. I don’t like the cell phones that do this either. Way too Big Brotherish for me. No, no, no.

That’s kind of how I’m thinking… but I also have the biggest fear that one of DS’s will get taken… but I’m a paranoid irrational mamma about stuff like that. They are 2 & 4 & I still check on them after they’ve gone to bed & up until I go to sleep a few times a night… to make sure they’re in their rooms & breathing! Maybe I’ve seen one too many Unsolved Mysteries.
I don’t like the idea of GPS b/c of gov’t tracking etc… but then, I have had things like that from them that they can track me on – Passport, mil ID, etc. On one hand it’s like, good b/c if I’m in a foreign country & something goes wrong maybe they can find me… or if DS had something we could know where he was if there was an emergency/kidnapping… but on the other hand… I get the heebie jeebies.

Yikes I’d have never thought of this… and how scary. That’s a good point.
And honestly I didn’t even realize it would be a microchip like they put in animals… hmmm.

At face value, it sounds like such a good idea. But monitoring individuals, against their will, can turn into something really ugly.
There’s a Robin Williams movie with something similar titled “The Cutter”. I encourage everyone to check it out.
I’d never put a chip in my child, but I’m tempted to give her a phone I can track, like those new Disney ones, once she’s old enough to have one.
Oh, now you are moving too far from the drama and just becoming a recap of what’s happened. That’s way less fun.
Well they already have them in dogs and cats and other pets. Unfortunatly those microchips float too so they can move around the body.
I wouldn’t be microchippingmy child however putting something in there car when they can drive might not be a bad idea if they decide to break a curfew so I can see where they are.
It would be so tempting to check up on them and they need freedom to get into trouble and learn from it.
Again, with handing the government more power they don’t need.
Should we start tattoing 666 across our forheads too? No way, I’m letting ANYONE put chips in my children. And may the Lord prevent the day when that is completely the norm and even required.
Hey, are you saying there’s something wrong with my 666 tattoo?
I have to add, if chips become the norm, don’t you think the bad guys will learn to remove the chip, block it, or disable it? It may just lead to a false sense of security. Not to mention what the gov’t could do with it when the kids (who were not old enough to give informed consent) grow up!
Sorry, I know this isn’t the point to this blog, but I REALLY had to say that :p
Rachel, I TOTALLY agree! I just try to keep some of my “non-conformist” ideas out of the blog
I can go a little too far sometimes.
Thanks for reading and THANKS for the comment too!
I would definitely!!! It could be removed when they are 18 or if they choose not to have it after they become and adult. I would if it were approved!!! Our children would be safer with this and if not necessarily safer atleast we would KNOW where they are!!! SEE Casey & Calee Anthony!! There would be no QUESTION!
Dont think of it as monitoring think of it as WHERE IS MY CHILD SHE’S BEEN MISSING??? lets find out what the microchip says… If they are being bad (legally) they need it too to be tracked (troubled teen or distructive adult) who knows what they would find out. Parents these days don’t give a hoot bout there children and if it comes down to me giving my child an implant to find them later if needed.
